Let’s take a scenario where you want to send an email to 10,000 people regarding an update of your newly launched product (which may be anything from an ebook to a physically shipped product).
Would you send an email from gmail to 10,000 people? You might say LOL…
Yes, indeed you will go crazy!
Let’s take another scenario where you have a webform on your website where a visitor can fill out a form to download a free video tutorial. After the visitor fills out the respective form and gets the video for free, normally you also want to send a welcome email instantly.
Would you be monitoring 24*7 for your webform so that you can send an email instantly to all those people when they opt in for the video? LOL…
Logically that is impossible as they would never get an instant welcome email.
So the question still remains unanswered? What is email marketing?
Let’s see what people are saying about this:
According to Wikipedia, Email marketing is directly marketing a commercial message to a group of people using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. It usually involves using email to send ads, request business, or solicit sales or donations, and is meant to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness. Email marketing can be done to either sold lists or a current customer database. Broadly, the term is usually used to refer to sending email messages with the purpose of enhancing the relationship of a merchant with its current or previous customers, to encourage customer loyalty and repeat business, acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately, and adding advertisements to email messages sent by other companies to their customers.
According to webopedia, email marketing is a type of direct digital marketing that uses electronic mail (also called email or e-mail) as the marketing communication delivery method.
In one of their articles, everything-email.com has mentioned that, Email marketing is a form of direct marketing that uses electronic mail as a means of communicating commercial or fundraising messages to an audience. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing.
In their guide to email marketing, Kissmetrics has mentioned that, it’s one of those legendary pieces of Internet history formed when the road was still being paved and we were foraging our way through the wilderness of what was the original World Wide Web.
Let’s make it as simple as bread & butter 🙂
In plain and simple terms, email marketing is all about promoting your brand or service via an email where the receiver has given you a permission to send them an email.
It’s essentially any e-mail a company sends out to people (but there are a few approaches to it which are covered in the later section).
This is not done by gmail, yahoo, hotmail or any other similar ones. This is done by automated email marketing softwares which we will see in a while.
Journey to the past of email marketing
1978 it was when Gary Thuerk of Digital Equipment Corp [DEC] had sent out the first mass email.
He had sent it to approximately 400 potential clients via the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network [ARPANET] which resulted in $13 million worth of sales in DEC products.
This was the point in time which highlighted the potential of marketing through mass emails.
